Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, you will be received and transferred to the office of Monte Amazonico Lodge for important information about the tour. Afterward, we will proceed to the port where we will take a one-hour boat ride to reach our lodge. Upon arrival, we will welcome you with a refreshing fruit juice that is typical of our region, followed by a short briefing. Once you have settled in your respective rooms, you can take a brief rest before joining a two-hour introductory hike in the dense tropical forest. An expert local guide will accompany you and take you through our trails to observe the diverse flora, including trees that can be over five hundred years old, and fauna, including wild animals such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, butterflies, and more. You will have a unique opportunity to experience the magic of the Amazon Rainforest within the Tambopata National Reserve, a protected area of 278,000 hectares under Peruvian laws. After lunch, we will visit "Monkey Island," situated in front of our lodge, across the Madre de Dios River. Here, we can spot different species of monkeys, such as brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddleback tamarin, and white capuchin, all living on the island. We will then return to the lodge. In the evening, we will go on a caiman search along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. Don't forget to bring a flashlight! With some luck, we may also see the capybara, the world's largest rodent that can weigh up to 60 kilos. It is an impressive member of the Peruvian cuy family. Later, we will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge.
After an early breakfast, we will take a short boat ride to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. After checking in at the checkpoint, we will embark on a 3-kilometer (approx. 2 miles) walk to reach Lake Sandoval, one of the largest in the Tambopata National Reserve, known for its piranha habitat. After the walk, our guide will provide a rowing boat, and we will navigate through the lake to observe various species of birds and monkeys, such as Hoatzin cormorants, Jacanas, puma herons, eagles, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. If we're lucky, we might encounter the family of giant river otters (almost two meters long), which are in danger of extinction, and the largest alligator ever recorded (over 4 meters long). We will return to the lodge for a typical lunch. In the evening, we will take a night walk to appreciate the diverse insect, amphibian, reptile, and other nocturnal animal species. Afterward, we will have dinner and rest at the lodge.
At 5:30 a.m., we will embark on a morning jungle excursion. The canopy walkway will provide us with a different perspective of the rainforest, allowing us to see it from 30 meters high. The bridges will enable us to appreciate nature from a high altitude and provide a panoramic view of the Rio Madre de Dios. From the platforms, we can observe various bird species such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, orioles, and many more, making it a wonderful experience. After breakfast, we will prepare for a thrilling activity in the trees at a height of more than 30 meters. We will do the zip-line with an instructor guide who will give us a talk about how to use the safety harness during the activity. Feeling the rush of gliding through the trees, this experience will stay with you forever. There are two cables that support more than 3 tons. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, our challenge will be to kayak across the Madre de Dios River and enjoy the fascinating sunset. We can also try our hand at artisanal fishing in the river, and with a little patience, we might see some fish species such as catfish.
Early in the morning, we will take the boat to visit the parrot clay lick, a wall of earth (clay) on one side of the Madre de Dios River, where different species come down to the wall to eat this special and essential clay needed for their metabolism. There, we can observe more than five species of parrots, such as the blue-headed parrot, dusky-headed parakeet, mealy parrot, and the elusive blue-headed macaw. Other macaws, like the chestnut-fronted macaw, can also be observed. We will return to the lodge for a late breakfast. After breakfast, we will visit a family of indigenous people who will let us take part in their daily activities and learn about their customs and traditions that have been maintained over time. We will have lunch with the family before returning to the lodge. Dinner and rest.
After breakfast, we will return to the city and provide a transfer to the airport and/or bus station.
We recommend bringing mosquito repellent, a flashlight, binoculars, personal items, sunscreen, hiking shoes, long shirts, and pants.
