Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our Macaw Clay Lick Tour, a 2-day, 1-night journey through the heart of the Tambopata rainforest. On day one, after arriving at the airport or bus station, we’ll transfer you to the office of Monte Amazoníco Lodge and his tour Operator Carlos Expeditions for a final briefing before setting out. You’ll then travel in a 4×4 wheeled truck for approximately two hours until you reach the banks of the Tambopata River, where you’ll board a boat to the lodge. After a warm welcome and a hearty meal, we’ll take an introductory walk into the rainforest to see the amazing wildlife up close.
On day two, we’ll rise early at 4:30 am to embark on a breathtaking journey by boat to the world’s largest macaw clay lick, «EL CHUNCHO.» Along the way, we’ll have the opportunity to see some incredible species, including capybaras, tapirs, and even jaguars. Once we arrive at the macaw clay licks, we’ll witness hundreds of parrots and macaws of different species feeding on clay, in one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. After breakfast and some resting time, we’ll take a walk through the botanical garden, where we’ll see fruit, timber, and medicinal species in our area. Finally, we’ll return to Puerto Maldonado, with memories of an unforgettable journey that will last a lifetime. Join us for an adventure that will leave you breathless!
Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, we will transfer you to the office of Monte Amazonico Lodge and their tour operator, Carlos Expeditions. Here, we will have a final briefing about our Macaw Clay Lick Tour before embarking on our adventure. If you have large luggage, we recommend repacking to store any unnecessary items and only bring what is necessary for the trip. We will then proceed with a 2-hour land transfer via a 4x4 wheeled truck to reach the banks of the Tambopata River. If we take the river route, it will take us more than 6 hours (just for your information). From there, we will take a boat to reach the Monte Amazonico-Tambopata Lodge. Upon arrival, we will be welcomed with breakfast or lunch, depending on the time of arrival. In the afternoon, we will take an introductory walk into the rainforest, where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat, such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and incredible insects, among others.
We will wake up very early at 4:30 am to embark on an incredible journey by boat to the world's largest macaw clay lick, "EL CHUNCHO." The boat ride will take approximately 1.5 hours, during which we will have the opportunity to spot some amazing species, such as capybaras, the world's largest rodents, tapirs, and even the most beautiful South American feline, the jaguar. Many of our clients have even been witnesses to encounters with these beautiful mammals, with photographic evidence to prove it. Upon arrival at the macaw clay licks, we will witness hundreds of parrots of different species (11) coming to eat clay adjacent to the river on the wall. We will then settle into our chairs and wait to witness one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. First come the parrots, followed by three species of the most colorful macaws in America, in shades of reds and greens, blues and yellows, who come to gather and eat clay needed for their daily diet and to eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity, we can see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying over us, an experience of a lifetime. After this, we will return to our lodge for breakfast and some resting time. Then, we will take a walk through the botanical garden, where we can see some fruit, timber, and medicinal species in our area, in the company of our guide. Lunch will be served. Our boat will then take us back to our transport to Puerto Maldonado, following the same route back. Upon arrival in the city, we will transfer to the airport.
We recommend bringing mosquito repellent, a flashlight, binoculars, personal items, sunscreen, hiking shoes, long shirts, and pants.
